Cadernos Negros
In 2024, Quilombhoje, under the editorial leadership of Esmeralda Ribeiro and Márcio Barbosa, releases the 45th edition of Cadernos Negros, an annual publication dedicated to Black literature in prose and poetry.
Founded in 1978 in São Paulo, the same year as the creation of the Unified Black Movement Against Racial Discrimination (MNU), Cadernos Negros represents an essential editorial stronghold for the literary social movement. This achievement is particularly due to the determination of a collective of Black intellectuals who aimed to challenge the established canonical order upheld by academic and literary circles, where Black voices had no representation and were often stereotyped.
When first published—symbolically, in the month of November—the initiative by writers Cuti (the pseudonym of Luiz Silva) and Hugo Ferreira included contributions from only eight poets: Ângela Lopes Galvão, Celinha, Jamu Minka, Oswaldo de Camargo, Henrique Cunha Jr., Eduardo de Oliveira, and the two creators themselves.
