How, in a city of 40,000 inhabitants, are 18 indigenous languages born and resisted?

This mosaic of languages and ways of life in the Alto Rio Negro region is marked by the opposition between river and forest peoples.

Languages of the Forest will bring to movie theaters the synesthesia of life between river and forest and its percentage consequences in the structure and musicality of different indigenous languages. In this search, we pay attention to the signs and concepts that these languages give us, in order to better understand the history of the millenary occupation and preservation of this living territory, as well as the perspectives for these cultures in the challenge of contact with the national society.

Vicente Ferraz, Filmmaker from Rio de Janeiro graduated in Communication at PUC-Rio, and in Film at EICTV – San Antônio de Los Baños International Film and TV School, in Cuba.

Argument and consultancy

Karol Obert, Master in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication from the Martin Luther Halle Saale University, Germany, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from USP, has already carried out several works with the Waruá community, in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM).

Collection, transcription and translation of traditional stories;

Training indigenous researchers in computer management and relevant programs for linguistic documentation;

Development of a Portuguese-Daw-English trilingual dictionary.
